Searching for my Spanish family
Edited by Nicolina Ribera
Stefanina Maria Roselló was born in Innisfail Queensland in 1926, two months after the death of her Spanish father, Esteban Roselló, in mysterious circumstances. Her Sicilian mother then sold her husband’s sugarcane farm in Innisfail, and, with her father and brother, moved to an apple farm in Stanthorpe, on the Queensland-NSW border. In 1930, leaving her brother in Australia, Stefanina’s mother and grandfather returned to Sicily, with four-year-old Stefanina.
This is Stefanina’s story of her life, growing up in Poggioreale in Sicily, and decades later, migrating with her husband and young family to Sydney, Australia in 1959. Always searching to learn what happened to the Spanish father she never knew, she gradually discovered the truth, leading to her reunion with his family in Villa-Seca, Spain.
Stefanina’s story was recorded in 2006 by her daughter, Nicolina Ribera, from the many stories she had shared over the years, and published for the family in 2024.
