A Snelson Armoury
by Adrian John Snelson
An heraldic study into the origin of the Coat of Arms being: Argent a scythe the blade in chief the handle in bent sinister Sable, claimed by Roger Snelson (1576-1647), a dyer of London. He was born at Sutton in Macclesfield in Cheshire, and christened at St Michael's church. The Snelson Arms appear on a silver chalice, quartered with other armorials, donated by Roger and still in the vault at St Michael's. These connections intrigued the author, resulting in a dogged detective hunt. An approach to the College of Arms in England proved misleading. However, the discovery of hand drawings in King's Vale Royal at the back of Ormerod's History of the County Palatine of Cheshire, at the Mitchell Library in Sydney, Australia changed everything. A fascinating study.
