A Family History
by Jenny Rudd O'Neill
As a youth, Jabez Canvin worked in the mines near Bath in England. Then he emigrated all alone to a country far from where he was born. He rose to become a respected Alderman and a leading citizen in his home town. Outspoken, he fought for better air in the mines, for a just wage and for public parks. His wife Esther had a sad childhood but raised a large family to be capable, charitable and successful. She wanted her children to have happy, comfortable lives. They did. They left many descendants, most of whom probably have no idea how difficult life was for their early ancestors. This is their story.
