As a youth, Jabez Canvin worked in the mines near Bath in England. Then he emigrated all alone to a country far from where he was born. He rose to become a respected Alderman and a leading citizen in his home town. Outspoken, he fought for better air in the mines, for a just wage and for public parks. His wife Esther had a sad childhood but raised a large family to be capable, charitable and successful. She wanted her children to have happy, comfortable lives. They did.
