A War Diary full of mirth and the macabre
by Otto W. Renger
A darkly funny memoir of a young German who was conscripted into World War II at age seventeen. After initially training for the Luftwaffe Paratroopers, Otto was sent to the Italian Front in 1944. He was eventually captured by the British in 1945 and sent to a POW camp in Egypt until his repatriation in 1948.
Like many soldiers, Otto never wanted to be reminded of the pain and suffering of the war years, so it was many years before he was encouraged to publish this record. Otto's memoir is based on his war diaries, kept for years in Germany by his mother.
He brings a humorous twist to almost every situation and tells a very human story, allowing a glimpse into the perspective of a young soldier caught in the chaos of war. His remarkable ability to find comedy even amidst the horrors of battle and during his captivity as a prisoner of war makes for a compelling tale.
