A journey of discovery revealing a hidden family truth
A Family History
by Judith Neville
George Plant was a dishonest, deceitful, and unreliable man, a rogue. He spent his early life in and out of prison for theft and fraud. Finally, he was transported to Western Australia for manslaughter. While there, he was charged with running a brothel with his wife as a prostitute. After his conditional pardon, he abandoned his wife and daughter fleeing to Sydney where he was gaoled for swindling items from shopkeepers using dud cheques. He was a bigamist twice. While in gaol again, he left his Sydney family so destitute his third wife had no choice but to place her children into foster care. As adults, his children changed their names to hide his shameful past and fabricated an elaborate family history that was believed until the truth was uncovered.
The journey of discovery revealing this hidden family truth weaves together the family in England George left behind, the inquest and trial resulting in his conviction for manslaughter and transportation, his life and family in Western Australia, and finally his family in Sydney and his last incarceration before his death at the age of fifty-eight.
