WHO KILLED LOLLYLEGS

The True Story of the Death of an Aborigine

by Barry Ridding

WHO KILLED LOLLYLEGS

From the beginning of white settlement in Australia, atrocities had been committed against Aboriginal people. This is the true story of the murder of an Aboriginal man in central Australia in 1940 - the murder of Lalili (more commonly known as Lollylegs). He was a troublesome individual; he caused trouble for his own people, the Pitjantjatjara, and the white men. He was a violent man who inflicted great harm on his wife, and an insolent man who did as he liked, when he liked.

This story follows the murder, investigation, Coroners Inquest, and murder trial of the two white men charged with his gruesome murder. It also looks at the enquiries and decisions made by those in the Northern Territory judicial system to bring the two men to trial, and the steps they took to try to ensure that it was not a whitewash. It also looks at those outside the judicial system who also tried to ensure that the white men charged, if found guilty, were not allowed off scot-free just because they had killed an Aborigine. Lastly, the book examines the evidence presented at the trial, and other factors that came to bear on the jury’s decision. It also examines the ramifications of the jury verdict and what part it played in the future of the two accused.
