A Story by Margaret Bowering
Illustrations by Lucy Urquhart
This story of the rescue of Lenny, a baby possum separated by his mother, is based on actual events but it has been retold for young readers in primary school. It has been written in the hope that it will inspire readers to face life’s difficulties with the same indomitable spirit as Lenny, the possum. At the same time the story will lead us to a greater respect and even love for the unique possums of our city.
The story mentions special people who already have that love of our city animals. Many of them belong to WIRES, a volunteer organization that has been rescuing and caring for Australian Wildlife for over 30 years.
