Did history always move so fast? As viewed from 2024, it seems not, though maybe this is not quite so. I have homed in on the period 1924-2024 since it encompasses most of my parents’ lives and mine.

There have been huge technological and societal changes through this period, and I have struggled to summarise the main ones that have influenced my own life. Could my parents possibly have imagined what changes this century would bring?

Some of the biggest changes have been in communications and connectivity. While previous generations exchanged letters that took days or weeks to arrive, now we have instant connections and news through our mobile phones. And not just with our ‘nearest and dearest’, but with many others with the press of a few buttons. And, as for books, will we still have them by Y2100? Maybe it’s time I stopped writing…
