This book tells the story of the development of Greta Camp, located in the Hunter Valley, NSW. Initially built as an army training camp in 1939 for soldiers going off to WWII, Greta Camp became a migrant camp from 1949 until its closure in 1960. Over 100,000 displaced persons, stateless people, migrants and refugees were housed there after fleeing Europe in the aftermath of the war.
The book includes over 130 individual stories retold by former camp residents or their descendants. Some of these stories have remained untold for 70 years.
‘Beneath the Shadows of Mount Molly Morgan’ is an everlasting monument to those pioneering people whose hope of a better life was their common dream. Their contributions to the cultural fabric of our country as ‘New Australians’ deserves acknowledgement and documenting for future generations.
