for Friends of Gore Hill Cemetery
by John Flint
This record of the Gore Hill Cemetery in Sydney is a continuation and extension of the work so thoroughly put together by Edith Sims in her history, Gore Hill Cemetery, 1868-1974, published by the Friends of Gore Hill Cemetery in 1985. Edith Sims described her work as limited to an account of the Cemetery as "a 19th and 20th century public utility".
This history is an account of how this historic site came to be preserved after 1974 as an important part of the heritage of Sydney's North Shore. As with Edith Sims' book, this work is not about the people interred in the Cemetery or the monuments themselves, except incidentally.
The main sources of this history are the Minutes, Annual Reports, and other records of the GHMC Trust, supplemented by records of the Friends of Gore Hill Cemetery, and personal recollections of Trust members. The author was a member of the Friends of GHC from their inception, and was Secretary-Treasurer of the Trust from late 1997 until it was dissolved in 2012.
