A Railway Town
Local History
by Margaret Szalay
Construction of the Central Western railway began in 1867, heading west from Rockhampton in Central Queensland. The line reached Bogantungan in 1881, Barcaldine in 1886, and continued on to Longreach, finally reaching Winton in 1928.
Settled in 1880 and declared a town in 1881, Bogantungan, like many other small settlements, was established at the rail head to provide for the railway workers and their families as the construction of the Central Western rail line moved west. When the rail construction moved on, most of these towns slowly died.
Bogantungan lasted longer than most because of the huge challenge as the line was built across the steep Drummond Range, to the west of Bogantungan. These years were quite prosperous for the town and its businesses, but it too soon faded as the railhead moved on.
