MOUNT ABUNDANCE HOMESTEAD

& Early Settlement in the Maranoa in South Queensland

by Margaret Szalay

Mount Abundance Homestead

The Maranoa district in southern Queensland, west of the town of Roma, was first explored in 1846 by Sir Thomas Mitchell, Surveyor-General for the Colony of New South Wales. His reports of the beauty and fertility of the area encouraged the first squatters to move into the area, bringing their herds of cattle and sheep.

The first settler to claim the area around Mount Abundance was Allan Macpherson in 1847. The property was later owned by Stephen Spencer from 1857 until 1869. Their stories are included here.

Now Heritage-listed, Mount Abundance Homestead is an important part of the early history of pastoral settlement in Queensland in the years leading up to its separation from NSW in 1859.
