FROM PRUSSIA TO THE LOGAN

Their known ancestors and descendants.

Our Schmidt ancestors came from the Trampe area of the Uckermark region of Prussia (now in the state of Brandenburg), north-east of Berlin, where in the 1800's, the feudal system was ending and rural population no longer had security of work or home.

With the separation of Queensland from New South Wales in 1859, the new government introduced a widely popular scheme of sponsored immigration from Germany (also England & Ireland), offering free passage, contracted employment and an offer of their own land. The Schmidt family was one of many who gathered their possessions, and with their entire families, emigrated en masse from the 1860's.

The BUHK family made the same decision in the 1880's, joining the growing German Lutheran community at Bethania, on the Logan Reserve near Beenleigh, south of Brisbane.

The Buhk, Schmidt and Schliemann families intermarried within the German community on the Logan, often more than once, and where possible, the stories of related families are included.
