FINDING MY FAMILY

The Family History of Karen Maree Roberts Carson

by Karen Roberts

ROBERTS FAMILY

While I was growing up, my mother was the quiet and protective constant in my life, supplemented by occasional visits from a mysterious yet kind father-figure. That circumstance was the pattern of my life. I never questioned the situation, warned by my mother’s mantras including, “Don’t make your father angry?”

Subconsciously throughout my life, I have sought answers to my beginnings, to ground the ambiguities in facts. Who were Mum and Dad beyond being my parents? What about those people who came before? Were they like me … strong‐willed, curious, kind and thoughtful, hesitant and fearful, yet determined and warrior‐like when it counted?

In writing my family history I have learned what was special and unique about each ancestor, how each one coped with his or her particular set of life’s circumstances. I can also see the origins of character traits that have survived across the generations and been born anew within me. Whether it is nature or nurture that have made me the person I am today, my ancestors and I have been essential links in the arc of life.

Family names include: Carson, Holley, Worthington, Clare, Neave, Cooper and Webster.
